This morning, everyone has to feel bad for Edmonton Oilers defenseman Kris Russell. In a 6-4 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, Russell is the one who accidentally pushed the puck past his own netminder Laurent Brossoit, generously giving the opposite team the win.

You may have seen the goal several times, but here it is once again:

After the game, while Twitter was insulting Russell, his teammates did not hesitate to stand up for him and come to his defense.

He’s a guy you would go to war for. He does everything for us,” said Connor McDavid to Sportsnet, moments after Russell’s own-goal.  “He throws himself in shooting lanes where most guys would be diving to get out of the way. He puts himself in harm’s way.”

The captain was not the only one looking to praise Russell.

He does so many good things for us, you can’t fault a guy for making a mistake like that,” said Brossoit.

Russell was still very frustrated by his mistake.

It was a bounce,” said Russell. “I turned to try and battle it out and obviously you know what happened.”

I’m pretty frustrated with the way it ended. I don’t know what you want me to say? You know what happened at the end.”

Poor guy...
