The Edmonton Oilers might be getting ready to end this terrible season, it will be talked about all summer long as the team keeps looking for their new general manager who can come in and save the day.

This new GM will also need to reassure fans that captain Connor McDavid isn’t going anywhere. Rumours of the star player wanting out of Edmonton have resurfaced after he finally voiced his frustration on Monday as the Oilers were officially eliminated from the playoff race.

" [My frustration level is] really high. It’s really, really highWe want to play in the playoffs as a team. I personally want to play in the playoffs. I’m not happy about it. It’s going to be a long summer.”

“We don’t even have a GM, so I don’t think we’re in any position to comment on next season,” McDavid said. “We have a lot of crap to figure out. I hope we can put the right man in the spot and we can put together a good team.”

“It’s just not good enough,” McDavid continued. “All year. We let (losing) streaks drag on, we let times where we weren’t able to find wins drag on. You have to find a way to stop the bleeding, quick. There is a slim margin of error in this league. We did our best to stay in the fight, but it was a little too late.”

While some insiders believe he wants out and others think he is willing to stick around and make it work, a few would like to see the Oilers pull a blockbuster move to entice McDavid - and Leon Draisaitl - to stay in Edmonton and become a true contender.

Edmonton Journal’s David Staples notes Hockey Night in Canada analyst Craig Simpson’s suggestion that the Oilers should shop center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for a top player in return. They believe he would be the best trade chip at the moment to get the needed pieces to fill voids in Edmonton.

We simply can’t imagine the Oilers losing their minds and trading McDavid and Draisaitl, so it seems like RNH is the best option to save the club and their captain.

If the Oilers were to move Nugent-Hopkins, Staples suggests packaging him with a defenseman like Matt Benning or Kris Russell for a “strong-to-outstanding defenseman”.

Fans might be against the idea seeing that RNH just had his career-best 67-point performance this season. However, this might be what entices other teams to want to land the centre and pay a top return for it.

The next Oilers GM might be reluctant to deplete their already thin secondary scoring depth so he will need think ahead and see what can be done to save - well everyone in Edmonton…
