We might be getting closer to the trade deadline, however, the Anaheim Ducks are walking away from a blockbuster trade they might have been able to pull off before Monday.

According to Eric Stephens and Josh Cooper of The Athletic, the Ducks and pending unrestricted free-agent forward Jakob Silfverberg agreed on a five-year contract extension. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun also mentioned that an agreement was in place on Wednesday.

The deal is worth more than $5 million annually and contains a modified 10-team no-trade clause, but it won't be officially announced until March 1 or later to give the Ducks time to sort out tagging issues, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

Silfverberg, who was acquired by the Ducks from the Ottawa Senators in 2013, was rumoured at some point in the season as a potential trade bait for the Ducks seeing that they have struggled mightily this year and could have gotten a very interesting return in exchange for the 28-year-old.

"This would have been an opportunity for the Ducks to better their chances at not only garnering a high-round draft pick for this season — preferably a first-rounder — but also possibly improve their positioning and move up high into the first round," writes Stephens.

Silfverberg isn’t going to get you 25 or 30 goals. He’ll check in more around the 20-goal range. But he’s the kind of a player that will boost a contender’s top-six or top-nine forward mix for a playoff run. He still has a quick wrist shot, can kill penalties and play on a team’s power play. He also can work well with other puck-possessive linemates and is battle-tested.

Silfverberg has posted 16 goals and eight assists in 51 games this season, and will get to score some more as a Duck for a long time.
