One writer has really put himself out there with an extremely bold prediction.

ESPN's John Buccigross has broken down a case for why he believes that by the time Russian star Alexander Ovechkin retires from the game of hockey, he will have broken Wayne Gretzky's record for most goals scored in a career.

From Buccigross:

Ovechkin will get his 600th career goal next season, when he is 32. He'll likely get his 700th goal when he is 35, and he should get 800 by 38 or 39. If he can get to 800 by 39, then four more years should get him 95 more goals.

Ovechkin will have to set an incredible pace to get there, and furthermore he will need the durability to play into his 40s if Buccigross is to be proven correct. There have also been rumors that Ovechkin would like to end his career in Russian, something that could put his chances at the record out of reach.

Do you think he stands a chance at Gretzky's record?
