One of the top defensemen on the market is no longer available.

This one came as a major shock, with just about everything pointing in the opposite direction until now.

According to a report from Peter Botte of the New York Daily News, New York Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic has made the decision to remain a New York Islander, and as a result as rescinded his trade request. Botte for the first time also revealed what many suspected, Hamonic's desire for a trade had nothing to do with the Islanders as a team, but was instead the result of serious health issues with one of his "extremely close" family members.

Thankfully it now sounds like those health issues have improved, and Hamonic no longer feels the same need to be closer to home. This is of course good news for the Islanders, and bad news for the many teams who were rumored to have interest in the talented young defenseman. This now likely leaves St. Louis' Kevin Shattenkirk as the best available defenseman through trade.
