One serious suitor chasing Nylander revealed!
Zuma Press

Toronto Maple Leafs fans keep biting their fingernails as William Nylander remains an unsigned restricted free agent with just a few days to go before the start of the season. Some are starting to wonder if general manager Kyle Dubas should simply pull the trigger and trade the young forward. If ever Dubas chooses to do so, it was revealed today by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic that one team stands out as a suitor.

According to LeBrun, the Carolina Hurricanes have called the Leafs to talk about the possibility of landing Nylander.

"I can tell you that I know the Carolina Hurricanes are among the teams that have phoned of late to check in on William Nylander with the Leafs. Just in case. As they should, by the way. ‘Are you trading him?," said LeBrun, who was a guest co-hosted Friday on Leafs Lunch on Toronto’s TSN 1050.

The Canes were reportedly told by the Leafs they weren't looking to move him. It seems like management will keep working at making a contract extension stick and be profitable for both camps.

"But they’re not going to offer-sheet him because who’s to say where Carolina is going to finish in the standings this year. Are you going to give away a first, a second, and a third if you sign him for $8.1 million or less?
“So the teams that probably need William Nylander the most are the teams that can ill-afford to afford the compensation draft picks-wise. So that’s one of the reasons you don’t see a lot of offer sheets.
“But the other one, and I mentioned this on Insider Trading, the Leafs for this season have a ton of cap space, so they’re going to match almost anything that they’re going to throw at William Nylander and then figure out the rest later.

The Leafs are sticking to their guns in not wanting to trade Nylander, who is coming out of his entry-level contract and will need another year of pro before he’s eligible for arbitration.

The Canes' phone call might put a bit more pressure on the Leafs' shoulders to get this deal done in the next few days.
