Last July was a busy time in the NHL. Besides the usual free-agent signings that come earlier in the month, hockey fans were also treated to some blockbuster trades. Everyone remembers where they were when they heard about the Subban for Weber swap or Hall for Larsson trade. But, they may not remember exactly where they were when the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators got together to make a big-league swap: Mika Zibanejad for Derick Brassard.

While the Rangers/Senators trade doesn’t have the marquee talent of the aforementioned trades, it’s been instrumental for both sides. Now, one year later, who wins the deal? Esten McLaren, hockey writer for The Score, takes a deep dive analytical look at both forwards and proclaims the Sens and Brassard as the winner.

Specifically, McLaren points to Brassard’s impressive defensive play and possession statistics as reasons why he earns the nod. Surprisingly, however Brassard has the edge in offensive production, as well.
