In case you missed it last night, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin absolutely DUMMIED Carolina Hurricanes rookie Andre Svechnikov.

Midway through the first period of last night’s pivotal Game 3 between the Capitals and Hurricanes Ovi KO’d the 19 year old Svechnikov, sending the kid crumpling to the ice.

Immediately after the game, in which the Hurricanes won handily 5-0, Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour was critical of Ovechkin, calling him out for taking on a rookie.

“When you see that, it makes you sick,” Brind’Amour went on to say. “(I’m) still sick to my stomach about it.”

Now, Ovechkin is firing back and claiming that he never instigated the fight in the first place. He was merely taking up Svechnikov on the invitation.

“First of all, I hope he’s OK,” Ovechkin said to Chris Kuc of The Athletic. “I’m not a big fighter, and he’s the same. He asked me to fight and said, ‘Let’s go.’ I hope he’s OK. You don’t want to see a guy get hurt or something.”

Svechnikov’s teammate Dougie Hamilton admitted that he wasn’t able to erase the visual from his mind all game.

“I kept thinking about him the whole game,” Hamilton said. “I just hated seeing that. I just hated the whole part of it. (It’s) just something you never want to see. I just feel so bad for him, and hopefully, he gets better soon. The game doesn’t really matter when something like that happens, you just can’t get it out of your head. I just hope he’s OK.”

One thing’s for sure, with a 2-1 series and some bad blood now, we’re in for a fantastic Game 4 tomorrow evening.
