It has been a busy summer for Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. He completed his diplomatic duties this week as the NHL’s ambassador to China, but also managed to get the rest of his fans very worried about his future in the NHL.

Ovechkin made headlines when he mentioned that he would consider retiring at the end of his current contracts, which expires in 2021.

However, on Thursday night, the Russian superstar wanted to get things straight on the record, and denied the controversial rumours of a possible early end to his NHL career and return to the KHL.

“We will talk about that after two years,” the Capitals captain told NHL.com on Thursday in a telephone interview from Beijing.
“I have to be healthy. I have to be in good shape,” Ovechkin added. “I’m going to try to do it, but you don’t know what’s going to happen in the future.”

The star forward will celebrate his 34th birthday on Sept. 14, but he has not slowed down. He led the NHL with 51 goals last season; it was his eighth 50-goal season and record eighth time he led the NHL in goals.

It might be a different story all around in two years…
