This just in, according to a report by Tom Gulitti of NHL.com, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin fell awkwardly in practice this morning and had to be helped off the ice by his teammates. Gulitti also reports that Ovechkin was not able to put weight on his left leg.

Check it out:

Suffice it to say that if Ovechkin is injured for any significant length of time then it would spell disaster for the Capitals. Ovechkin is not only the team’s captain he’s their best player by a significant margin and is, arguably, the best player in the entire NHL. Certainly he’s been the league’s most prolific goal scorer over the past decade and a half. So, again, losing him to injury would be catastrophic to the Capitals.

UPDATE:

Crisis averted! Ovie is back out there!

Really though… should we be surprised? The Russian machine never breaks.

The 33 year old Ovechkin has missed just a handful of games over the course of his 13 year NHL career. He’s arguably the most durable superstar in NHL history. No surprise that he shook off whatever ailed him in the moment.
