It has been a busy summer for Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. On Tuesday, he continued his diplomatic duties as the NHL’s ambassador to China by meeting a 10-year-old fan who had traveled over 600 miles from Shanghai to Beijing to meet the Russian superstar.

While it was heart-warming to see Ovechkin spending time with the young boy, who plays hockey, and according to the Capitals, plays on the left-wing just like Ovechkin, the star player managed to get the rest of his fans very worried about his future in the NHL.

Ovechkin made headlines last week when he mentioned that he would consider retiring at the end of his current contracts, which expires in 2021.

On top of that, Ovechkin made the strange comment that he was also being an ambassador for the KHL, making fans even more suspicious of his desire to leave the NHL soon to join a team back home in Russia.

“I am glad I have this opportunity to be an Ambassador there, representing both the KHL and NHL,” Ovechkin said, as reported by Sport24.ru and translated by Igor Kleyner. “We will have practice sessions and master classes. Everybody knows how many Chinese there are in the world, maybe they’ll have the next Wayne Gretzky!”

This has got fans worried and for now, we better enjoy the last two years we have with this superstar in America it seems…
