Ovechkin scores his 40th of the season in classic Ovechkin fashion.

This looks awfully familiar.

Ovechkin scores his 40th of the season in classic Ovechkin fashion.

I understand that when it comes to covering a player as skilled as Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin, it's much easier said then done. With that said I still don't get how teams continue to leave him open at the top of the face off circle, a position from which he scores so many of his goals.

Friday night was no exception, Ovechkin was back at the top of the face off circle and recorded his 40th goal of the season in very Ovechkin-like fashion, blasting home the one-timer that has defeated so many National Hockey League goaltenders during his 11 year career.

Ovechkin also because just the 7th player to register at least eight 40+ goal season in his first 11 seasons, and further more he now needs just one more 40 goal season to tie the all time record for a winger with nine 40 goal seasons. Currently two players are tied for that record, both of them NHL legends, Luc Robitaille and Mike Bossy.
