In case you missed it, earlier today nearly two dozen players were placed on waivers as part of some significant roster cuts made across the NHL.

Check out some of these names:

Christopher Gibson (NYI)

Tanner Fritz (NYI)

Seth Helgeson (NYI)

Michael Sislo (NYI)

Steve Bernier (NYI)

James O’Brein (OTT)

Paul Carey (OTT)

Ethan Prow (PIT)

Dakota Mermis (ARI)

Brad Malone (EDM)

Keegan Lowe (EDM)

Kevin Gravel (EDM)

Dillon Simpson (CBJ)

Nathan Gerbe (CBJ)

Zac Dalpe (CBJ)

Tommy Cross (CBJ)

Ashton Sautner (VAN)

Reid Boucher (VAN)

Jaycob Megna (ANA)

Julius Nattinen (ANA)

Interesting to note that Nattinen is being place on unconditional waivers for the purposes of terminating his contract. It’s expected that he’ll return to his native Finland to continued his career.

Amongst the players placed on the waiver wire, it’s probably most surprising to see veterans like Nathan Gerbe, Steve Bernier and Zac Dalpe. By no means is a certainty that these players get claimed, in fact it’s probably more likely that a young player like Ashton Sautner or Dakota Mermis get a fresh start with a new squad.

Another surprising cut has to be Boucher from the Vancouver Canucks. The 25 year old sniper tore up the AHL last season with the Utica Comets, scoring 25 goals and 46 points in just 45 games. In the NHL however, Boucher managed just three goals and five points in 20 games with the Canucks. With other young players like Elias Pettersson, Jonathan Dahlen and Tyler Motte trying to nail down a full time spot with the Canucks, it’s really no surprise that Boucher is the one on the outside looking in.

While no waiver claims have been during the preseason, don’t be surprised if we see some movement on the waiver wire later this week. With the NHL’s regular season set to begin in under two weeks time, coaches and general managers are going over their rosters with a fine toothed comb.

In case you missed it, yesterday was an even busier day on the waiver wire. Check it out:
