Yesterday, Ottawa Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau delivered a hard hit in the back of Vancouver Canucks defensemen Ashton Sautner, sending him face first into the boards. Sautner was slow to get back on his feet and could have been badly injured. The incident occurred at 16:23 of the second period. Pageau was assessed a minor penalty for boarding. Today, he was set to appear before the NHL Department of Player Safety to explain himself.

After reviewing the hit, the NHL just handed down its decision: Jean-Gabriel Pageau has been suspended for one game, without pay. Also, under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Pageau will forfeit $16,666.67, based on his average annual salary. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund. This season, Pageau got 4 minutes of penalty in 31 games, scoring 3 goals and getting 7 assists for a total of 10 points.

Ashton Sautner was recalled from the AHL in February, after having suffered a really bad injury in a game with the Utica Comets. On December 8, the 24-year-old defenseman took a high hit from Eric Tangradi — who was suspended one game by the American Hockey League — while playing the puck at Binghamton. The player was in immediate and noticeable pain after falling awkwardly to the ice. He got out with a fractured orbital bone. He has since been focused on the positives after an unavoidable surgery following the injury.

Both the Ottawa Senators and the Vancouver Canucks have known a poor season this year. Ottawa is last in the Eastern Conference as the Canucks occupy the 12th place in the Western Conference.
