Patrik Laine could end up in Boston!

It’s been a crazy roller-coaster ride when it comes to the Patrik Laine trade rumours and now we see to be going all the way up with the latest chatter. Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic recently reported the Winnipeg Jets and Laine are poised to part ways, especially since recent speculation mentioned that the top forward would dare to not show up at camp if he’s not dealt this offseason.

And so this prompted NBC Sports’ Jimmy Murphy to throw fuel on the Laine firery rumours when he explain how Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney did due diligence on Laine in the weeks following his team’s second-round series loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning but not much came from it.

He may be ready to come back and fight for Laine, which would redeem the Bruins’ offseason which has been more than subpar. Murphy believes Laine should be a prime Bruins trade target and could end up in Boston before the start of the 2021 campaign.

Laine, who is set to become a restricted free agent next summer, is going to ask for a hefty pay raise, way more than the two-year, $13.5 million deal he signed before this season, and will only leave his current team wanting more cap space to fill out the roster. A trade makes sense. But will it take place? 

There is no doubt that Sweeney would need to be creative to make this trade happen with just $7.35 million to sign restricted free agents Jake DeBrusk, Karson Kuhlman, and Zach Senyshyn. DeBrusk has also been mentioned in trade chatter, so he could become part of a package going to Winnipeg for Laine. Murphy imagines that the Jets would likely want a first round pick and a top prospect back to go along with DeBrusk if he was the centerpiece coming from Boston. 

The question is : will Sweeney and the Bruins be willing to pull the trigger and redeem themselves ahead of the 2021 season? 

In his fourth season in the NHL, Laine recorded 28 goals and a career-high 35 assists for 63 points in 68 games.
