If you’re searching for an inspiration hockey story this season, ditch the NHL, the World Juniors or anything team/league and look no further than the Vancouver Spirit A2 PeeWee hockey team.

The team recently participated in the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup challenge and raised over $1400 for a local family in need. The provided the family with a full Christmas experience, including presents and dinner.

The kids were encouraged by their head coach Stephen Gillis to take up the challenge and help someone in need. But now it’s Gillis himself who needs help and his team is stepping up to meet the challenge once again.

Gillis, who has Crohn’s disease, was recently diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder called IGA nephrotathy.  Unless Gillis receives a new kidney from a donor, there’s a very good chance that his disease will progress. ”They said basically my attitude and my aggressive nature is likely the only reason I'm not dead," Gillis told CBC’s Maryse Zeidler.

The coach still hasn’t missed a practice yet, despite going through excruciating pain on some days.

The Spirit have stepped up and called on donors to come forward to save their coach with this extremely touching video shared on Instagram.
