There is no doubt the general manager Jim Rutherford of the Pittsburgh Penguins is fearless when it comes to the free-agent and trade market, however, we are now wondering if he should be afraid as well…

Pittsburgh is reputedly exploring the possibility of hiring former Florida Panthers general manager Dale Tallon to assist Rutherford for the upcoming season. According to team insider Rob Rossi of The Athletic, Tallon is a candidate to join Pittsburgh “in some capacity” and fans are wondering if that means the Penguins are considering a major shift in teh front office seeing that the team is not the top contender it once was…

This news comes days after the Penguins hired Trevor Daley - who won two championships with Pittsburgh - as a hockey operations advisor after the blue liner retired Monday. The team fired assistant GM Jason Karmanos earlier in the day.

Tallon part ways with the Panthers in August following the club’s qualifying-round loss to the New York Islanders. A few weeks later, it was revealed by  NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly that the league was investigating Tallon for his conduct in the Toronto bubble, and It was  reported  the longtime executive was being probed for making racially insensitive remarks on multiple occasions. However, Tallon’s departure from the Panthers  reportedly had nothing to do with his alleged comments.

The former GM even explained how he believed the inquiry centered around observations he made about Minnesota Wild defenseman  Matt Dumba, who is Filipino Canadian. There has been no update on the situation since confirming the investigation back on Aug. 28.

Tallon spent 10 years with the Panthers after serving as GM of the Chicago Blackhawks from 2005-09. He could be next in line to replace Rutherford in Pittsburgh, though he and Jim are 70 and 71 respectively.
