Penguins being accused of 'condoning racism.'

There are some very serious, and frankly way over the top accusations being levied against the Pittsburgh Penguins by some members of the hockey media.

On Monday it was revealed that the Penguins would be accepting the invitation from President Donald Trump to attend the White House, and invitation that is extended by every President to every team that wins the Stanley Cup Championship.

This fact alone sparked outrage from members of the hockey media, with one individual in particular, Sportsnet's Mark Spector, going so far as to suggest that the Penguins inexplicably condoned racism and ignorance by merely accepting an invitation from the President.

These are the same Pittsburgh Penguins who visited the White House several times before when Barrack Obama and George Bush were in office, a move that has never been politicized prior to now.

The Penguins released a statement in response to these accusations:

The Pittsburgh Penguins respect the institution of the Office of the President, and the long tradition of championship teams visiting the White House. We attended White House ceremonies after previous championships - touring the historic building and visiting briefly with Presidents George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama - and have accepted an invitation to attend again this year.

Any agreement or disagreement with a president's politics, policies or agenda can be expressed in other ways. However, we very much respect the rights of other individuals and groups to express themselves as they see fit.

Whatever your political beliefs may be, accusing someone of condoning racism when they've done nothing to suggest anything remotely resembling such behavior seems far too extreme, and frankly has no place in hockey.
