Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford has just sent a strong message to his team on Wednesday morning when he announced that assistant coaches Sergei Gonchar, Jacques Martin, and Mark Recchi’s contracts will not be renewed for the upcoming season.

It appears that head coach Mike Sullivan’s spot in safe… for the moment.

“We just thought we needed to change the dynamic of our coaching staff. We have very high standards here in Pittsburgh, and we want to continue competing for Stanley Cups. The message to our fans is that ‘We are not rebuilding, we’re re-tooling.’”

On Tuesday, Rutherford has warned his players, staff and fans that changes were coming, stating that he was looking at everything now to improve his club.

The contracts of Gonchar, Martin and Recchi expired at the end of June but were temporarily extended for the playoffs. The search for new assistants to work under head coach Mike Sullivan will begin immediately.

Rutherford also mentioned that he would keep the core of his roster intact, but would be looking at potential trades. Eliminated teams are now allowed to make moves and we could see the Penguins busy very shortly.
