The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a pair of significant roster moves ahead of their Tuesday night match up against the Vancouver Canucks.

According to a report from the Penguins official website, the organization has sent backup goaltender Tristan Jarry back down to the American Hockey League. Jarry is expected to join the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins once again and his most recent call up now appears to have been largely unnecessary. Jarry was called up to the main roster earlier in the season however he would not appear in a single game for the Penguins since that move was made.

Replacing Jarry on the main roster will be 28 year old center Derek Grant, another player that has yet to appear in a single game for the Penguins in the 2018 - 2019 National Hockey League regular season. Strangely enough when Jarry was called up it was Grant who was sent down, this in spite of the fact that he had appeared to have cracked the opening roster. It's unclear why the move is being made now but Grant's performance in the American Hockey League may have played a factor.

After being sent down to the AHL Grant would only appear in a single game for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins but it was a solid showing on his part. The veteran center recorded a goal in that one game and although he did not add an assist he did finish the night with a plus minus rating of +2. Grant looked like a guy who could definitely hold down the center position in a depth role and that may have helped his case to get back to the main roster.

The unfortunate reality of this currenty predicament for the Penguins is that bouncing Jarry back and forth between the AHL and the NHL has resulted in him getting no game time yet this season. Of course as a backup goalie you have to be prepared and ready to go and the drop of a hat, but you would be hard pressed to be too critical of Jarry if he gets off to a slow start given his current circumstances.
