The Pittsburgh Penguins have found themselves in something of an odd situation, and it is one that must be causing them a great deal of headaches at this time.

According to an official announcement from the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, the team has made a pair of call ups today following their decision to move 2 of their core roster players to injured reserve. First the call ups, according to the report the Penguins have called up goaltender Emil Larmi of the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL as well as forward Thomas Di Pauli from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Now that in and of itself was enough to raise some eyebrows in the Penguins fan base due to the fact that Emil Larmi is not a player that the Penguins generally call up to the NHL level.

The moves were announced alongside the Penguins move to place 2 players in injured reserve, those players being forward Jake Guentzel and defenseman Justin Schultz. In the case of Schultz the designation has been made retroactive to the time of the injury on the 17th of December, although he has long since completed the requirements for an injured reserve designation so that point is relatively moot.

By far the most curious part of the announcement however was the revelation that one Penguins call up was cancelled outright. I mentioned earlier that Emil Larmi is not a regular call up for the Penguins and that is because he has in fact never played in a single NHL game during his career. Larmi only has 5 career games played at the American Hockey League level in fact and has only been called up due to an unforeseen circumstance. According to the Penguins the plan was to call up goaltender Casey DeSmith over the weekend, however DeSmith appears to have lost his passport somehow and was unable to join the team. For those of you wondering why that would be relevant to him playing for the team, well the Penguins are set to face off against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday and that requires them to enter into Canada.

A weird situation overall but a huge opportunity for Larmi to get a taste of the NHL life.
