The Winnipeg Jets have just lost a significant piece of their line up, but when they see just how much it took to sign him I do not think they will be too upset about the situation.

According to multiple reports it appears that veteran forward Brandon Tanev is set to join the Pittsburgh Penguins, and based on what I have gauged from the reaction so far fans in Pittsburgh are not loving this. Although still not officially announced it now seems quite definitive that Tanev will be the next member of the Penguins forward core, and it sounds like the plan from Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford is to have him in the line up for a very long time.

According to TSN insider Bob McKenzie the Penguins have included huge term on this deal, locking down Tanev's right for the next 6 years. That is a very long term for a guy who is never going to be a part of your top pairing, and additionally it sounds like Tanev got himself a pretty good number here as well. McKenzie reports that this deal is expected to fall somewhere in the range of $3.5 million per season which makes this a very big commitment for the Penguins. In fact some are already comparing this to the rather ugly contract that was given to veteran defenseman Jack Johnson not so long ago, another deal in which Rutherford have a middling player a ton of term. That deal of course has proven to be quite bad for the Penguins and obviously the hope will be that we do not see a repeat of that here.

In his most recent season wit hthe Jets Tanev appeared in 80 games and recorded 14 goals and 15 assists for a total of 29 points on the season.
