Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford looks to be spending a lot of time on the phone lately. According to the Athletic's Josh Yohe, defenseman Ian Cole's agent, Keith Magnuson, has been involved in the trade talks, suggesting the blueliner “could theoretically have a new contract upon being traded.”

This strategy could improve the veteran defender's value, but several spots must be filled on the Pens' roster to ensure a long playoff run, like everyone has been expecting them to have since their back-to-back championship in June.

Yohe believes that moving Cole could leave the Penguins thin on the blueline with Chad Ruhwedel and perhaps Frankie Corrado as their sixth and seventh d-men.

A move could be done to add, but Rutherford has been quite clear about boosting his club's offense then fixing his third-pairing blueliners. The Pens need better scoring up front, especially on their third-line where a centre is much needed.

It is to be noted that Cole is one of the Penguins’ best penalty killers and leads their defensemen in puck-possession numbers.

Several clubs are looking to bolster their back end and Rutherford could target clubs in need of veteran defensemen, such as the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals or Toronto Maple Leafs

The Pens will also have to see what needs to be done concerning goalie Matt Murray, who left last night's game with a lower-body injury. The starter will be evaluated by the Penguins medical staff today. Maybe Rutherford's plan will need to change again...

Stay tuned.
