PETA targets legendary Detroit's tradition.
Wall Street Journal

Nowadays, it seems whatever you do will offend someone. Some people are justified to be offended, some are not, but you never spend a day without facing someone pissed off about something. Maybe it was always like this but the news cycle makes it ever more apparent.

Anyhow, the last game ever to be played at the Joe Louis Arena is scheduled for April 9th against the New Jersey Devils. Of course, this evening will be full of memories and the glorious history of the Red Wings will be highlighted. It's clearly a night you don't want to miss.

One central tradition in Detroit is obviously the octopuses being thrown on the ice as a lucky charm. Most people enjoy this tradition very much, but the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is asking for it to stop. In fact, they ask the Red Wings organization to kick out of the arena anyone who brings an octopus and even fine the person 5,000$!

Here's a quote out of their declaration.

"Octopuses are intelligent, sensitive animals who feel pain, and it's no more acceptable to kill one for such a disrespectful, frivolous, and stupid purpose than it is to throw a dead bear cub onto the ice during a Bruins game. PETA is calling on the Red Wings to penalize any fan who brings an octopus into Joe Louis Arena and bar them from ever attending a game again."

Needless to say, it has a lot of people talking, for good or bad reasons.
