Gustav Nyquist is facing serious league reprisals after losing his cool last night.

The NHL's Department of Players Safety announced Sunday evening that the Detroit Red Wings' forward has been offered an in-person hearing for deliberately high-sticking Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon.

Although the date of the hearing has yet to be determined, the in-person hearing all but guarantees that Nyquist is facing a lengthy suspension. The minimum suspension following an in-person hearing is six games, but could run even higher depending on the offence.

If the infraction might require a suspension of six games or more, the offending Player is offered the opportunity to an in-person hearing. In this case, the Player remains suspended until the hearing takes place. If the Player waives his right to an in-person hearing, the hearing will be conducted by phone.

The incident occurred when Spurgeon gave Nyquist a cross-check while fighting for the loose puck. Nyquist retaliated with a blatant stick to Spurgeon's face, inciting both teams to stand their ground.

It has been a frustrating season for Nyquist, who has only seven goals and 29 points in 56 games.

Nyquist will forfeit $26,388.89 per game of his suspension and the cost of a six-game ban would be $158,333.33.

Although Nyquist said what happened was unintentional, he will nonetheless be held accountable for his dangerous actions.
