Player penalized after devastating his opponent with a high, late hit.

Only one game after Capitals' forward Tom Wilson was fined for a dangerous knee-on-knee hit to an opponent, one of his teammates may soon find himself in hot water with the NHL's Department of Player Safety.

During Saturday's Game 2 action between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Caps' defenseman Brooks Orpik laid a brutal hit on Penguins' blueliner Olli Maatta. 

Maatta releases the puck and elects to cut back up-ice. Orpik is pursuing Maatta closely and levels him as the two engage. The hit appears to be high to Maatta's upper body and head, in addition to being late.

Maatta was helped off the ice and sent to the locker room for examination, while Orpik was assessed a two-minute penalty for interference. Maatta was not on the Pens' bench to start the second period, and seems unlikely to return.

This is likely to get a second look from the league, which means that Orpik could face supplementary discipline in the coming days.
