There is really no sugar coating situations like this, this man is an idiot.

According to a report from Montreal newspaper "Le Journale De Montreal," a volunteer official was violently assaulted over the week end during what should have been a friendly hockey tournament. What makes this worse is that the tournament, known as the "Tournoi Harold Cyr Olympique 50," is not some children's hockey tournament but is instead for adults, which means the person assaulting the referee is a grown man, or at least he should be.

Since the incident has gone viral after the video in which it was captured was widely circulated on social media the man has been identified as 45 year old Nicholas Cyr, who has no relation to the namesake of the tournament in spite of the coincidence. In the video the 45 year old Cyr can be seen arguing with a pair of on ice officials before the officials finally decide that the argument is no longer worth their attention. It is at that moment, while the official is turning his back to skate away from the argument, that Cyr delivers his cowardly sucker punch.

Unsurprisingly the unnamed official appears to have never seen the punch coming and as a result he goes down in a heap on the ice as soon as it is delivered. Luckily for Cyr the official in question has not yet filled charges against him although a police investigation has been opened in the matter and law enforcement has made it clear that they are now aware of the video and the incident in question.

Surprisingly, as is often not the case in this situations, Cyr has come forward and issue a public apology for his actions and appears to be taking full responsibility for what he did. This certainly does not excuse what he has done but, credit where credit is due, it seems he genuinely regrets his actions and is tremendously ashamed of what he has done.

"I have not slept since Saturday. I am extremely sorry and I will  continue to be tomorrow," said Cyr as per the report.

The winner of the tournament walked away with $1700, and that's total not each. Certainly not the kind of money you want to potentially land yourself in jail for, especially not during a friendly hockey game.
