Dallas Stars defenseman Roman Polak was stretchered off the ice in the second period of Thursday night’s contest versus the Boston Bruins after going headfirst into the boards and everyone in the rink was worried sick.

Polak was chasing Bruins forward Chris Wagner into the corner and simply took an awkward fall into the boards while attempting to stop. After the crash, he didn’t move…

Everyone expected the worst. Polak had to be taken to the hospital, where it was revealed he had full use of his extremities.

On Friday, it was revealed that Polak in fact suffered a small fracture of his sternum last night. He will be evaluated in one week.

We bet fans weren't expecting him to suffer this injury. Nothing related to his head or neck. He is very lucky.

The Stars also lost three more players to injury in the first contest of the season. Blake Comeau sustained a lower-body strain and will miss multiple weeks. Jason Dickinson suffered an upper-body injury and will be out at least a week. As for Corey Perry, he has a fractured foot and will be sidelined at least a week.
