Pominville breaks down during interview and walks away in tears

The Buffalo Sabres have two games left to the regular-season calendar and it will be time to pack their bags as they have failed to clinch a playoff spot despite a positive start to the year.

While their last contest in on Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings, their final game at home in Buffalo takes place tonight against the Ottawa Senators.

Jason Pominville has consistently been an impactful player for the Sabres at the age of 36-years-old. Last week, he was nominated for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, the “award given annually to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”

The guy has been a key element to the Sabres and has helped young players like captain Jack Eichel and defenseman Rasmus Dahlin getting adjusted to the NHL. However, it may come to an end and it feels all too real for the veteran.

Pominville’s contract expires after this season and when he was asked about the possibility that tonight’s contest could be his last one in front of the Buffalo crowd, he broke down. Pominville asked to be excused from an interview with the media to compose himself as the topic was on his potentially last home game.

“Since I’ve been drafted, that was in ’01, all I’ve wanted to do was wear the sweater. I’ve been fortunate enough to do it for a while. But the drive in this morning, I definitely had to think about it.”

He revealed that the reality of it became all too real when he drove to the rink this morning.

General manager Jason Botterill may want to consider bringing him back on a one-year contract. Pominville is a needed veteran around the team with playoff experience and is respected in the dressing room.

And you can tell how much it would mean to him to be back with the Sabres.
