For the past few years, Alexis Lafreniere has caught the attention of many people across Canada, and also in the National Hockey League.

You’ve heard the name.

He has made a name for himself in the QMJHL. During his rookie year in the junior circuit, the young forward produced 42 goals and 80 points in 60 games, earning rookie of the year and getting NHL scouts to pay attention to him. The 42 goals were the most by a rookie since Sidney Crosby in 2004.

The Rimouski Oceanic selected Lafreniere with the top pick at the 2017 QMJHL draft, its first No. 1 selection since Crosby back in 2003.

But that’s it. He does not want you to compare him to the Pittsburgh Penguins captain as he revealed in an interview with the New York Times

Lafreniere has loads of talents, but he wants to be his own person.

Sure just like Crosby, he has represented Canada at multiple events, including the 2018 Hlinka Gretzky Cup and the 2019 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He is expected to be the top pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

While he isn’t eligible until 2020 because of a late birthday, NHL scouts will keep an eye on him. On Tuesday, he became the youngest athlete Upper Deck has ever signed to an endorsement deal.

There are so many comparisons to make between Lafreniere and Crosby, but we better listen to the kid: he knows what he wants and if you’re the team looking to sign him you better stop the comparisons now.
