QMJHL to ban fighting?

Say it ain't so!

This one is sure to drive hockey purists nuts. According to a Tweet by Quebec's Minister of Education, Isabelle Charest, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League will hold a vote tomorrow that could potentially band fighting from the league.

Charest, a former speed-skater who competed at the Olympics and has the medals to show for it, is applauding the move.

"I support this initiative. The league is a valuable partner in the establishment of a healthy and safe sports environment and this decision will confirm its leadership," she posted to Twitter.

We get wanting to ensure athletes are kept safe, but come on. Who doesn't love a good fight in hockey?! The QMJHL is one of the three major junior leagues that make up the Canadian Hockey League so there's a very good chance others will follow suit if this vote goes through.

Even projected first overall pick Alexis Lafreniere has decided to shed the mitts this season and throw punches while playing in the Q. He's no worse for wear. It will be interested to see if this vote goes through and what the reaction might be. It's doubtful it would be as positive as Charest's, that's for sure.
