Vancouver rookie defenseman Quinn Hughes only has 27 career NHL games under his belt so far, but already he’s carving out his spot in the league’s history books. The 20-year-old blueliner has become the first rookie defenseman in the NHL’s long history to have multiple three powerplay assist games in a season, after accomplishing the feat again last night against the Nashville Predators in the Canucks’ 6-3 win. On top of that, he’s just the second rookie defenseman in NHL history with multiple three power-play point games in a season. The first to do it was Rick Foley of the Philadelphia Flyers, way back in 1971-72.

Hughes is certainly making his mark with the Canucks in his first full season, with two goals and 17 points in 22 games. In fact, he’s second to only Colorado’s Cale Makar when it comes to rookie points and assists this season. On his current pace, Makar may be unbeatable when it comes to the race for the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie, but you have to think that if Hughes can continue the track he’s been on, a nomination at the very least should be in his future.

Regardless of how the race for the Calder Trophy pans out, Hughes’ rookie season continues on an impressive pace. In his last four games, he’s averaged more than 23 minutes of ice time in three of those, something you don’t often see with defensemen with so little experience. It’s clear he has the trust of Vancouver head coach Travis Green and, so far, it’s been well earned.
