Rangers extend defenseman contract for two years.

The New York Rangers announced yesterday that defenseman Steven Kampfer has signed a two-way, two-year extension with the team. TVA reporter Renaud Lavoie made the announcement over Twitter with contract details.

Kampfer, originally drafted 93rd overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, was dealt to the Rangers earlier this season from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Dylan McIlrather. Since then, he’s suited up for 10 regular season games for the Blueshirts contributing a goal and an assist. He’s played most of the season in the AHL with the Rangers affiliate the Hartford Wolfpack where he’s produced 4 goals and 19 assists in 43 games.

If Kampfer’s name sounds familiar, you may remember him from his stint with the Boston Bruins and their run to the 2011 Stanley Cup championship. Kampfer was rehabbing a knee injury during the playoffs and was unable to participate, rendering him ineligible to have his name engraved on the chalice. The Bruins petitioned for his inclusion, but were denied. So close, yet so far.

In any case, Rangers fans shouldn’t expect much from the hard luck 28 year-old moving forward, but he does provide the team with some defensive depth should they need it.
