Recap: Leafs’ play finally catches up to them

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ over reliance on their goaltending finally caught up with them last night. Outshot badly once again, the Leafs dropped a 4-2 decision to the Philadelphia Flyers, despite being tied with only minutes remaining in the game.

Goals from Patrick Marleau, the 1,100th point of his career, and James van Riemsdyk simply weren’t enough for the Leafs on a night where they were outshot 38-20. As usual goaltender Frederik Andersen was outstanding, making several outstanding saves to keep his team in the game.

In the end however, Flyers forwards Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier would hook up on a beautiful play for the game winner with just 2:55 remaining in the third period.

“(Sitting back) wasn't our plan, that's not what we talked about. We stopped pushing for sure, but even then I thought we were in a great spot.” said Leafs head coach Mike Babcock  after the game. “One that went off somebody in our zone and ended up in our net. The other one is ‘just be above your guy’ coming back, simple. Even with that I still thought we were in a good spot to get a point or two points, we just didn't execute. We've got to do a better job.”

The Leafs were without the services of superstar Auston Matthews, who sat out with an upper body injury for the second consecutive game.
