The Detroit Red Wings opened their preseason schedule last night in style, defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins by a score of 4-2.

Mitch Callahan notched two goals and 2015 first-round pick Evgeny Svechnikov added a power play tally. Moreover, Riley Sheahan completed a nifty passing play by Gustav Nyquist in order to help his team win.

Both Jimmy Howard and Jared Coreau split the goaltending duties, where Howard allowed one goal on 15 shots and Coreau letting one past him on the 18 shots he faced.

In spending close to seven years with the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids, 25-year-old Callahan is surely hoping that he’ll get his fair chance this upcoming season after being re-signed to a one-year deal during the offseason. He had 19 goals and 32 points last season, and his gritty style of play is evidenced by his 94 penalty minutes.
