The Detroit Red Wings had several names thrown about in rumors when it came to who would take over the vacant assistant coaching position the team is currently looking to fill, but there is a new frontrunner.

According to a report from an Ottawa Senators's insider, the Ottawa Sun's Brucie Garrioch, the Senators former head coach Dave Cameron has been granted permission to speak to the Detroit Red Wings for the position.

From Garrioch's report:

While there are no guarantees, and it isn’t known where he stands, the former Ottawa Senators coach was given permission to speak with the Detroit Red Wings about an assistant’s job with Jeff Blashill and may have met with them not long after returning from the world championship.

Cameron did a respectable job behind the Senators bench, and it is believed that a strained relationship with owner Eugene Melnyk played a large role in his termination, and there's no doubt that an assistant wit head coaching experience would be valuable to Detroit. This is made even more true in Detroit's case with a first time NHL head coach in Jeff Blashill.

No word yet on how close the two sides are.
