Red Wings announce starter for Game 1 of the playoffs.

The Detroit Red Wings, and more specifically head coach Jeff Blashill had a tough choice to make going into the playoffs, with inconsistent performances from both his goaltenders this season.

Despite the fact that Petr Mrazek performed better overall, Blashill has opted to go with his veteran goaltender, Jimmy Howard, in game one of their first round playoff match up against a depleted Tampa Bay Lightning squad. The Red Wings made it official confirming the announcement through social media.

This is a major moment for Howard's career, after being named an All-Star last season he went on to lose his #1 job to Mrazek, and there were even rumors behind the scenes suggesting the Wings could look to move his contract. A strong postseason performance could go a long way to rebuilding his reputation as a quality goaltender, something that has to be on his mind. Despite what has to be intense pressure, Howard says he's in his element.

“I’m just going to out there and do my own thing,” said Howard as per the Detroit Free Press. “I’m not going to worry about anything else. I’m not going to worry about what others are saying. I’m just going to go out there and play my game.”

Fans won't have to wait long if the move pays off, the Red Wings kick off the playoffs tonight.
