Red Wings announce the first coaching replacement behind the bench.
Keystone Press.

The Detroit Red Wings announced a major shake up behind the bench to kick off the week, and it appears the team has already found at least one suitable replacement for it's two vacant assistant coaching positions.

According to a report from Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press the Red Wings have signed assistant coach Doug Houda to a three year contract, and he will fill one of those aforementioned vacancies under Jeff Blashill. Houda was most recently an assistant under head coach Claude Julien of the Boston Bruins but was dismissed from that position when the team failed to make the playoffs.

It's expected that Houda's duties will be focused primarily on the defensive side of things, with him focusing on play in the Red Wings zone and more specifically the penalty kill. For Houda it's a return to the team who drafted him all the way back in 1984, and the former NHL defenseman will look to pass on his wisdom to a younger generation of Red Wings.
