They say no press is bad press, but that is not the case for the Detroit Red Wings as the team's logo appeared prominently at a white-supremacy rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

A Michigan-based white nationalist group called the Detroit Right Wings used the Red Wings’ logo without permission or authorization of any kind.

The Red Wings and the NHL will not stand for their property to be used to advance such causes and are taking action against the group responsible.

The Red Wing have issued this statement, calling the use of the organization's logo "disturbing" and confirmed the team "vehemently" disagrees with the rally and is in no way associated with the event, the organizers, or the supporters.

The Red Wings also said they are “exploring every possible legal action as it pertains to the misuse of our logo in this disturbing demonstration," and will make no further comments on the situation.

The NHL released this statement on the unlicensed and unauthorized use of the Red Wings logo on Saturday:

In an email from NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly sent to and published by The Associated Press, he said the use of the Red Wings' logo was "irresponsible and improper", going on to say:

“This specific use is particularly offensive because it runs counter to the inclusiveness that our league values and champions. We will take immediate and all necessary steps to ensure the use is discontinued as promptly as possible, and will vigorously pursue other remedies, as appropriate.”

The situation escalated quickly on Saturday afternoon when a vehicle ran into a crowd of peaceful protesters that were demonstrating against the white supremacist rally.
