The Detroit Red Wings are hoping they can retain soon to be free agent Darren Helm but they may have some stiff competition in that regard.

Helm is set to get his first crack at the open market as an unrestricted free agent, and according to Helen St. James of the Detroit Free Press there are a number of teams that would be interested in acquiring Helm.

Teams such as the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues, both looking to get faster after disappointing playoffs, would be among several likely suitors.

St. James indicates that the Wings might be hoping to land a hometown discount with Helm, and furthermore indicates her belief that he would be offered more than on the free market.

Ideally, the Wings would be able to secure Helm for around $3 million per season. On the market, though, he’d probably be able to get more than that, which is why he could bolt.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland has indicated his intention to touch base with Helm again this week, likely hoping to close a deal before July 1st rolls around.

“I talked to Helm, and will reach out to them again this week,” Holland said.
