The Detroit Red Wings will continue the Evgeny Svechnikov experiment, at least for one more season.

On Sunday the team officially announced that they had agreed to terms with Svechnikov on a brand new 1 year deal, the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. This looks like a low risk option for the a Red Wings team that could desperately use more young talent, and perhaps even more importantly it is the kind of deal that will not be heavily scrutinized if things continue to go down the wrong path for Svechnikov and the Red Wings.

Svechnikov, the team's first round draft select (19th overall) at the 2015 National Hockey League Entry Draft has at time been a source of frustration for Red Wings fans given the bumpy road he has had on his journey to the National Hockey League . There's no question that injuries have derailed his career in a significant way with a knee injury in 2018 being the worst of them. That injury, suffered during a preseason game, forced Svechnikov to miss an entire season and he admitted recently that it also impacted his play in the American Hockey League last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the Red Wings affiliate team.

This will be an extremely important year in the development of Svechnikov and it will likely determine whether or not he proves to be a bust for the Red Wings. Some have already applied that label to the young forward but given his injury woes I still think it is too early to tell whether or not he will become an impact player for the Red Wings. The issue for the Red Wings this season is that Svechnikov must now clear waivers if he is to be sent down to the AHL, something he had previously been exempt from in the past. This means that if the Red Wings intend to call him up to the main roster they will need to be confident he can hang there or they will otherwise risk losing him to a rival team on the waiver wire.

This is put up or shut up time for Svechnikov in many ways.
