Report: 25-year-old NHler could be named captain

Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters revealed that he will name a captain before the season-opener against the Minnesota Wild at PNC Arena on Oct. 7. And one name on the roster appears to be a strong candidate.

Not too long ago forward Jeff Skinner was asked to state his case for why he should be the Hurricanes' next captain, has reported NHL.com.

"I don't have much," Skinner said, clearly trying to avoid giving some awkward answer. "I guess I'm a bad campaigner. I think we've got a lot of great leaders."

Fortunately for Skinner, actions speak louder than words. At only 18 years old, he impressed at the 2011 NHL All-Star Game in Raleigh, N.C., and accepted the Calder Trophy a few months later. He is entering his eighth NHL season and is Carolina's second-longest tenured player behind netminder Cam Ward

Last season, Skinner registered an NHL career-high 37 goals and tying his NHL career high of 63 points in 79 games. He was an alternate captain last season, and is now a top candidate with defenseman Justin Faulk and forwards Jordan Staal and Justin Williams to wear the 'C' very soon.
