Is it tear down and rebuild time in Philly? One Flyers insider drops a bombshell…

Don’t look know, but the Philadelphia Flyers have quietly lost seven games in a row and find themselves at the bottom of the NHL’s Metropolitan division. While the 2017-18 season started with optimism for a young Flyers squad with legit veteran talent, things have gone sideways in a hurry. In fact, since going on an incredible 10 game win streak last season, the Flyers have won just 28 of their last 73 games. Ouch.

If the team continues to slide in the standings as the season wears on, how long until GM Ron Hextall makes a change? Flyers fans are clamouring for the dismissal of head coach Dave Hakstol, but could a fan favorite be on the chopping block first? Philly.com’s Sam Carchidi proposes a deal that would NOT be popular with Flyers’ die-hards: trade Wayne Simmonds.

And if this team is still buried in the standings in mid-January, Hextall might try to deal the highly popular Simmonds — whose team-friendly contract expires after next season — because he is a player who could bring lots of building blocks for the future.

Wow… could you imagine? I guess it makes sense if you feel that the Flyers are on the way down, rather than on the way up. Simmonds will be 30 next season and will be due a large raise once his current contract runs up on July 1st, 2019.

Don’t be surprised if the big winger’s name continues to pop up in trade rumors if the Flyers continue to dwell in the basement of the Metro division.
