We’re officially in the dog days of the NHL offseason. There’s obviously no hockey on the schedule, there are no big name free agents left on the open market and trade rumblings are few and far between. You know what we need right now? Another Sebastian Aho style RFA offer sheet.

Well… don’t count on it when it comes to Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski. A report from NHL.com with quotes from Werenski’s agent Pat Brisson and Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen.

Check it out:

“I have been in communication with the [Blue Jackets] throughout the summer,” Brisson said. “It’s our intention to have an agreement in time for camp. I’m most certain we will be continuing our talks in the near future.”

“I’m not the least bit worried,” said Kekalainen. “He’s a good player. We like him. We want to give him a fair contract and continue. We’re not the least bit worried.”

The 22 year old Werenski had an impressive 11 goals and 44 points in 82 games with the Blue Jackets last season and helped stabilize a strong D corps with defensive partner Seth Jones.
