Report: Blockbuster trade for Blackhawks’ 3rd overall pick fell apart at last moment
Zuma Press

When the Chicago Blackhawks went slightly off the board to take giant forward Kirby Dach third overall at this past weekend’s 2019 NHL Entry Draft, there were audible gasps from the crowd in Vancouver. After all, with an aging defense corps featuring Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook and with projected franchise defenseman Bowen Byram available, most experts saw a perfect marriage of Byram and the Blackhawks on the draft floor.

Of course, Blackhawks’ management obviously saw something different and elected to choose Dach instead. Byram would go one pick later to the Colorado Avalanche. Now, thanks to a report from Vancouver Canucks insider James Cybulski of Sportsnet 650, hockey fans are learning that things could have played out much, MUCH differently. Check out this doozy of a deal that was on the table between the Canucks and Blackhawks:

Interesting. For what it’s worth, the Canucks ended up selecting the uber-talented Vasili Podkolzin at 10th overall. So, in effect, the trade would have been Byram and Seabrook for Podkolzin. With rumours that the Canucks are set to spend upwards of $8 million in free agency on a defenseman like Jake Gardiner or Tyler Myers, maybe they would have been wise to simply take on Seabrook’s deal?

What do you think, Canucks fans?
