According to a report from NHL insider Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, the Boston Bruins are ready to commit HUGE dollars and term to pending restricted free agent defensemen Charlie McAvoy. Kypreos reports that McAvoy could make as much as Florida Panthers blue liner Aaron Ekblad, who signed a eight year, $60 million deal with an average annual cap hit of $7.5 million back in 2016.

Check it out:

“He’d love to avoid the bridge contract,” Kypreos said during the Saturday Headlines segment on CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada broadcast this past weekend. “I think it’s safe to say that his representation will look towards the Aaron Ekblad contract extension with the Florida Panthers that had an [average annual value] of $7.5 million.”

“With an aging Chara, it’s certainly something for the Boston Bruins to consider,” Kypreos added.

The 20 year old McAvoy has been a revelation for the Bruins during his first 70 NHL games. During his rookie campaign in 2017-18, the 6 foot, 210 pound blue liner managed an impressive seven goals and 32 points in 63 games. He’s off to another great start in 2018-19 with one goal and six points in seven games so far.
