Report: Bruins GM Sweeney admits to trade rumors

After starting off the 2018-19 season on top of the NHL’s Atlantic Division, the Boston Bruins have struggled through injuries and inconsistencies and now find themselves firmly in fourth place behind the division leading Tampa Bay Lightning, the surprising Buffalo Sabres and bitter rival Toronto Maple Leafs

Injuries to key players like Patrice Bergeron, Charlie McAvoy and Zdeno Chara have crippled the Bruins and have put the team in a difficult spot. We’re just a quarter of the way into the season, so there’s no need to push the panic button just yet, but if the team can’t navigate its way back to the top of the division there could be changes coming from general manager Don Sweeney.

In his latest 31 Thoughts column for Sportsnet, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that Sweeney is indeed trying to make a change, especially with his forward group.

Check out this tidbit from Friedman himself:

Hours before Boston’s 4-2 loss in Toronto on Monday, Bruins GM Don Sweeney confirmed he’s looking for help. “Up front, certainly.” he said.

That’s interesting, especially given the injury trouble that this team has had on defence. The Bruins have missed Chara, McAvoy, Brandon Carlo, Torey Krug and now Kevan Miller all for extended periods of time. You would think that the Bruins GM would be looking to shore up his blue line, rather than his forward lines.

“We don’t know what our team really looks like,” Sweeney said. “If there’s good news, it’s that some other guys have had to drive the bus…given us an idea of what they can do. (Coaches) Bruce Cassidy and Kevin Dean were part of our development plan, so they knew what we had.”

Sweeney did go on to say though that injuries have paved the way for three players, Jeremy Lauzon, Matt Grzelcyk and Joakim Nordstrom, to make a statement and stick with the team full time.

Again, from Friedman:

Who has impressed you? “(Jeremy) Lauzon. Small sample size, but he’s done well. Matt Grzelcyk. He’s come a long way…earned a higher profile, played almost 25 minutes (last Friday against Pittsburgh). Joakim Nordstrom, he’s our Swiss Army Knife up front.”
