Report: Bruins have made an extremely aggressive offer for Shattenkirk.

The Boston Bruins have reportedly made a major offer for a highly skilled young defenseman, and while it's certainly a gamble, it's one that could pay off huge for Boston.

According to comments made by TSN insider Darren Dreger during a radio interview with TSN's 1050 in Toronto, the Bruins have made an extremely aggressive offer for Kevin Shattenkirk of the St. Louis Blues, offering a first round draft pick.

“No, no. There’s lot of talk. Boston, I know, offered a draft pick, a first-round draft pick, for Kevin Shattenkirk, said Dreger as per Nichols on Hockey. My understanding is that the Blues may want to take one more run at extending him. He has another year left on his contract. And if they’re unable to do that, then they’re going to start keenly listening to some of that interest. Boston is right up there."

It's a big price to pay for the Bruins, and there's no doubt that Shattenkirk has the talent to warrant that price, but his contract status is where the gamble comes in for Boston. Shattenkirk will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season, and unless Boston can re-sign him prior to that they would risk trading away a first rounder for what amounts to a one year rental.

However if management can secure Shattenkirk for the long term, it would be a huge addition to a depleted Bruins blue line.

With that said the top story of the day remains the retirement of an NHL star after nearly two decades in the league.
