Report: Cam Ward has signed a new contract with the Hurricanes.

The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they will bring back veteran goaltender Cam Ward for two more seasons.

The official announcement from the Canes:

 Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed goaltender Cam Ward to a two-year contract extension. The deal will pay Ward $3.5 million in the 2016-17 season and $3.1 million in 2017-18.

“Cam has been a major face of the Hurricanes both on the ice and in our community for more than a decade,” said Francis. “We are happy he has chosen to continue his career in Carolina.”

It's big money for a goaltender who has had his fair share of struggles in recent years, and one that has been a focal point of criticism from an already disenfranchised fan base, however this will likely be the final contract of Ward's career, and having a legacy player like him end his career in the fold of the organization has value. For Ward this is likely more money than he would have received anywhere else.

Whether or not that is worth nearly $7 million against the cap spread out over the next two seasons is however debatable.
