A great deal for Vancouver.

The Vancouver Canucks will be awarded a draft pick thanks to a National Hockey League rule that no longer exists.

TSN 1040 radio host Matthew Sekeres‏ has confirmed that the Vancouver Canucks will be receiving the 55th overall pick in the NHL draft this year courtesy of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The Blue Jackets are forced to give up their second round draft pick as a result of the acquisition of head coach John Tortorella who at the time was under contract with the Canucks.

The move took place in 2015 and at that time there was a rule in place that allowed teams to receive compensation for staff that remained under contract with their organization. The rule however was incredibly unpopular among management in NHL organizations as well as NHL fans and has since been scrapped by the league.

Nonetheless the Canucks still get their draft pick.
